Connecticut-based husband-and-wife indie-pop duo Mates of State are bringing their fun and energetic live show to St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, MI on Sept 29th.
Mates of State recently released their newest record, Mountaintops, via Barsuk records. Mountaintops is the band’s newest album since 2008’s critically acclaimed Re-Arrange Us. The self-produced album was written and recorded over the last year and a half in 6 different studios with multiple different engineers.
The title Mountaintops comes from an old Zen tale where a monk’s philosophical advice is always just to ‘Aim for Cold Mountain’ -- essentially meaning keep-on-keeping-on, regardless of adversity; at the essence of life, the struggle is the key. The track titles and lyrics reflect this clearly, including titles like “Desire,” “Change,” and “Mistakes.” Opening track “Palomino” is about coming to grips with and letting go of a painful past, and “Total Serendipity” being about circumstances, chance, and fate.
