Motown Memories Made in Hamtramck: 31st Annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival Kicks into High Gear for 2011: September 3-5

Come celebrate the spirit of Motown at Hamtramck's annual festival of food, fun and family this Labor Day Weekend. This historic street festival brings thousands from around Metro Detroit back home with live music, carnival rides, artists and vendors in one of the most incredibly diverse and lively neighborhoods in the Detroit area. Special events like the Hamtramck Yacht Club Canoe Race or the Dudek Peirogi Eating Contest are pure Hamtramck and cannot be duplicated!

This year's theme of "Motown Memories Made in Hamtramck" is a nod to both Detroit's and Hamtramck's rich music and automobile heritage. A car show will feature automobiles that came from the former Dodge Main plant, which once stood in the Hamtramck city limits. Along with the cars, the music will be classic and contemporary--showcasing the rich musical tradition that like our cars, is like no other!

Headlining this year's line-up of local, regional and national acts will be legendary Motown hit makers The Contours, ? And The Mysterians, The Misty Blues, The Luddites, Big Daddy Lackowski and the La De Das, Toppermost Beatles Tribute, Pazman's Super Session, Polish Muslims and Hamtramck's own, Danny D – America's best Rod Stewart Tribute act .

"There is plenty to do throughout the weekend, as well as several special events," says festival organizer Kathleen Bittner. "Definitely don't miss Labor Day – with the early-morning Golab-K (5K) followed by the indescribable canoe race down Jos. Campau, the Polka Mass, the Polish Day Parade, the Dudek Peirogi Eating Contest and the presentation of Hamtramck's civic-pride "Good Egg" Award, it's definitely a fun-filled day."

Festival hours are from noon to 10 p.m. every day, with the carnival closing at 9 p.m. As it is every year, entry is free. Ample parking throughout the festival's perimeter as well as access to I-75 and I-94 makes an easy decision of coming to Hamtramck this Labor Day Weekend – the hard part is leaving.
