Esperanza Spalding and The Chamber Music Society - Music Hall Detroit - Friday, March 11th 8pm

Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is extremely proud to present, Bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding and The Chamber Music Society, Friday, March 11th at 8PM on the main stage.

A solo performer, Spalding creates a modern chamber music group with her improvisation and arrangements for jazz, folk, world and classical music. Her 2008 release “Esperanza” launched her solo career with more than 70 weeks on Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts.

Her latest project “Chamber Music Society” uses her “years of classical training, instrumental chops, multi-lingual voice, and natural beauty” to create a hypnotic show. She has been profiled in The New Yorker, O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Women on the Rise,” and nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as Up and Coming Artist of the Year.

Backed by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Leo Genovese – and inspired by the classical training of her younger years – Esperanza creates a modern chamber music group that combines the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation with sweet and angular string trio arrangements. The result is a sound that weaves the innovative elements of jazz, folk and world music into the enduring foundations of classical music.

Miss Spalding's 2008 major label debut, Esperanza, hit the Billboard jazz chart and stayed there for 62 weeks. As a bassist, Spalding’s credentials are incredible for such a young age as she attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music and became their youngest-ever faculty member by the time she was 20.

She has worked with musical icons like, McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Regina Carter, Michel Camilo, Mike Stern to name but a handful of greats. Not only a world-class bassist, Esperanza's amazingly versatile voice is a thing of beauty in and of itself— singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese; she may be one of the most exciting voices in jazz. Spalding’s genre-busting new CD, Chamber Music Society, combines a classical string trio with a rhythm section and features guest musicians, Milton Nascimento and Gil Goldstein.

The 2011 Grammy Awards have honored Esperanza Spalding
by being nominated for Best New Artist of The Year.
